Rain at last

Southern Kenya has finally got some rains. The river in Enkokidongoi has flooded and the passage close to the church has been damaged which makes it impossible to cross by cars. We have stopped habituating the baboon troop along the river because too many people are living close to the river, and the baboons might get problems to be friendly to tourists and at the same time have a healthy distance to people living along the river. The troop on the mountain spent most of the time in the tree tops so for the time being ECG will work with other projects in the area. Trees and birds are the next target area for tourism. 250 birds in the area has now been identified.

Walking with Lions

I went from Kenya to Zimbabwe and had two visits to make, Ishmael Nedziwe College of Labour Studies and Antelope Park in Gweru where you can walk with lions. They have 80 lions in a programme aiming to return the lions to wilderness. So far they have succeded in taking a few prides to level three (the last number (4) means total freedom in one of the national parks (http://www.lionalert.org/Lion%20Release%20Program.pdf) Dambwa Forest just outside the town of Livingstone in Zambia will be the settlement area for the first pride.

I am back in Nairobi after some days in Laikipia. We have been to Twala Womens Organization in Ilpolei which runs the baboonproject there. We had a very nice and interesting walk on the cliffs with the baboons. After that we went to Mpala Research Center and got a very informative afternoon about what they are doing. there. We had the opportunity to follow Kenya Wildlife Service out in the bush to find a dead elefant. It was shot in the belly and died after a few days. After Mpala we spent three nights at Ilngwesi Group Ranch. There were people from the Congress of Library (DC), UN and Duke University running a seminair on how to document the Massai peoples history etc.

Joel Njonjo of the OLKIRAMATIAN BABOON PROJECT (http://southriftccr.blogspot.com/) located at the Olkiramatian Group Ranch has successfully haubitated a baboon troop. We have a lot to learn from his project beacuse they are in the same type of rangeland and community as Enkokidongoi. I am leaving for Kenya on 15 June and plan to stay one month planning for our project. I shall also visit Zimbabwe and hopefulle have a walk with the lions at Gweru Antelope Park.

Vervet studies

Enkokidongoi troopPosted by Goran Goransson Fri, February 27, 2009 19:24:26

I am back in Kenya now and we are planning to slowly start studying our Vervet troop. Amanda Gideon will start the work in a few weeks time. The Cape Hunting Dogs are still creating problems for the local farmers and a herd of elefants are right now just outside Namanga. Kenya Wildlife Service is aware of the situation. The area is very dry and elefants with good memory knows about all nice mangos which can be found in Namanga.
